In her exploration of the societal and personal reactions New York's elite Claire's new status, Radziwill is witty and literate. She is especially deft in her mocking of the literate celebrities who have failed to find the humor in themselves. While still ceding grief its piece of reality, she is still able to turn a mocking eye on those who prey on widows.
I have to nod to the range of books emerging from the Real Housewives franchise. Certainly this is the most literate and worthwhile of this genre. While this book doesn't meet the promise of her first book, perhaps neither was this Radziwill's intent. Sometimes you just want to read for fun, and this book scratches that itch.
It was not what I expected.
Thought it was going to be a funny contemporary romance as in light and airy , but it ended up a more thought provoking read. I enjoyed it but definitely not what I would consider a "beach" read. I will definitely read her fiction again.
I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. Radziwill has an elegance to her writing. Her choice of words turns what would have been an ordinary sentence into something a little bit more. She does well riding that fine line between pretentious and common, especially since the subject matter of this novel could easily have come across as uncouth. I loved her memoir and enjoyed her novel. Hopefully Radziwill will continue to write so we can all enjoy her talent. I loved "What remains", this one was obviously different kind of book, but I could still see her thru the masked words.
Book was lovely in a strange and witty kind of way. I thought this was a pretty stellar read. I enjoyed the main character, and I felt like the all of the characters experienced very natural progressions. There were some definite OMG moments, and then there were a few moments that were predictable.
That said, I loved how the story ended, and it was a very different ending than what I expected. One person found this helpful.
This book was unbelievably boring. Widow in her 30's, married to an older, successful man, is just lost. Looking for men after 6 months. Sorry sista, it doesn't work that way. I got this book for two reasons. First, I had read Carole's book, "What Remains" a few years ago, just as my friend's husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I was engrossed in that book for a few reasons. In fact, after giving it away to a friend I bought it again when I purchased this one and re-read it. So, after having seen Carole on "The Housewives A Novel," not because I am a slow reader, but because it's a book I can put down , and go back to- not a book that I just have to finish.
I kind of got that impression about the writing, that it was something she put down and picked up. I love Carole's blogs, very insightful and tongue-in-cheek, but this novel seems to be stretched too thin. See all reviews.

After seeing the author on RH and hearing about her other book which gets high praise , I decided I wanted to read this one. Bringing preconceived notions happens all the time, but to post a review and not reference any possible bias is unfair. In addition to the lazy plot there are so many ill-fated attempts at humor in this book that made me roll my eyes so hard. Over the course of a year, Claire eats too little and drinks too much. Radziwell is an acute observer of other people and of her environment, and NYC natives will enjoy the setting of the novel. When it comes to her main character, Claire, however, the author is strangely dispassionate. We see things through the character's eyes, but never quite know how she feels, or if she feels at all. I found this to be the book's major flaw.. Although this book is fiction, it feels like a different approach to Radziwill's memoir.
In both books she discusses the dislocation of a young widow, but this one takes the approach of dark humor. Claire's husband has been killed suddenly by a falling sculpture caused by a broken cable. In her exploration of the societal and personal reactions New York's elite Claire's new status, Radziwill is witty and literate.
